QUESTION:How can we ensure that online information is secure ?There are a couple types of online security: the encryption of data while in transit, and restricted access to certain pages or documents. Encryption of private or sensitive information while being transmitted requires a security certificate and the use of "https" pages. A security certificate can usually be purchased through your web host. Processes and prices vary from host to host. When restricting access to certain pages, you need to know whether you are trying to block spam bots or human users. Spambots and other unwelcome automated crawlers are usually kept out by using a capcha. To prevent human users from accessing certain pages, those pages need to be behind a password-protected log-in. Some types of page can be protected this way; some cannot. Password log-in can prevent unauthorized access to:
It cannot prevent access to uploaded documents (Word docs, unprotected pdfs). Like many questions..."It depends" is a good bet here. Usually there is a way to secure sensitive information.
